Teaching is our Mission. Building a sound Basement for Research and Educating the Future Railway Engineers is our Task. We take that seriously!

We offer lectures on many different aspects of railway engineering and various interfaces of the railway system. We teach track technology, operation, economics, and organisational matters. We offer excursions, field visits and views into practical application with our guest lecturers and expert talks.

Our Topics

We teach the railway system. The bachelor’s program offers a course entitled “Railway Engineering – Basics,” which covers the wide range of topics related to railways, from infrastructure, line design, power supply, and signalling systems to operational management, the various types of transport services, and rolling stock. We offer additionally a hands-on lecture on line design.
In the master studies, these various topics are discussed more in detail. A key focus is track construction and maintenance, starting with inspection and recording of condition data, through analysis and interpretation of this data, to planning of maintenance measures (predictive maintenance). The economic evaluation of different options from the perspective of the infrastructure manager and the derivation of the necessary budgets to provide a sustainable infrastructure will be worked out independently in a practical environment. Other topics include railway operations, resilient infrastructure design, natural hazard management and monitoring, and sustainable urban transport. Whenever the new curriculum for the Master’s program in Civil Engineering – Sustainable Infrastructure Systems comes into effect, we will make suggestions here on how to “study railways.” The new curriculum will offer significantly more opportunities for in-depth study, but also the chance to broaden your horizons in other subject areas.
